## What is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of **2.5%** of one's net Zakatable wealth, payable once wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold and has been held for one lunar year (Hawl).

## Nisab

The minimum threshold above which Zakat becomes obligatory:

- **Gold Nisab**: value of 87.48 grams of gold
- **Silver Nisab**: value of 612.36 grams of silver

ZakatCal defaults to the gold standard; Fiqh school selection may adjust which standard applies.

## Net Wealth Formula

## The 5 Fiqh Schools Supported

1. **Hanafi** — Gold jewelry for personal use IS Zakatable. Silver Nisab by tradition.
2. **Shafi'i** — Personal-use gold jewelry generally exempt.
3. **Maliki** — Personal-use jewelry generally exempt.
4. **Hanbali** — Personal-use jewelry typically exempt.
5. **Jafari** — Major Shia school; calculator focuses on Zakat-specific items.
